  • Prof. Dr. Ivo Marek passed away on August 18, 2017. He was 84.

He contributed significantly to the development of computational methods of reactor physics,  to the development of functional approaches to numerical analysis and to modern numerical algorithms, namely to finite element method, to aggregation and multigrid methods. Markov's chains were another great hobby of him. Taking into account his rich scientific and pedagogical activity, his patience of the supervisor, his humor and personal charm, we must regret that we lost a great personality in Czech mathematics. Prof. Marek was our friend, teacher, and mentor. Every problem intrigued him; he had always on hand plenty of ideas on how to get a solution. He helped us and inspired us. His example and enthusiasm for the beauty of science influenced a large number of students and colleagues. Ivo, we miss you already now. Prof. Marek was internationally recognized. He had a lot of friends around the world. I would like to share with you the reactions of his foreign friends to the sad news of his death. Prof. Bodo Werner, University Hamburg Thanks for the (bad) new. I have very good memories on Ivo, I liked him very much. He was always encouraging. We had much fun together. Prof. Gerhard Opfer, University Hamburg Thank you for your message. When I spoke to Ivo for the last time (April 2017 on phone in Prague) I did not have a good impression of his health. Prof. Johannes Schropp, University Konstanz This is really sad news. Thank you for keeping me informed. I will remember Ivo. He will stay in my heart. Prof. Kunio Tanabe, Waseda University, Tokio I miss Ivo and sympathize deeply Mrs. Marek for Ivo’s loss. Please convey my sincere condolences to her. Prof. Alastair Spence, University Bath, England Oh that's a great shame. Ivo was such a nice man: larger than life, who liked a drink, and was always very welcoming. I hope he didn't have a long illness. Thanks for letting me know. Prof. Gene Allgower, University Fort Collins, United States I'm sad to hear of Ivo's passing away. We were once roommates in Marburg. We had a good time. Prof. Klaus Boehmer, University Marburg, Germany This is really a very sad news. Ivo was not only a good colleague, but a good friend to us all, and his death is a great loss for us all. Prof. Dr.Tugrul Dayar, Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey I am deeply saddened by the news and can imagine people that know him already are, too. I am very happy to have met him, spent time with him, and have seen him last in person on the occasion of his 80th birthday. It is quite nice that he has touched so many and will live in our memories. Kindest heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues.
